MODULE NINE HOMEWORK

This week’s homework assignment is quite a fun one! While setting up an alter for an ancestor is a great way to honor and celebrate their life, for the purposes of this course we are going to venture one step further and ask them if they’d like to fill a position on our growing team of spiritual allies.
This means that we are going to find out if Great Grandpa Joe just likes to visit on the holidays or if he’s ready to roll up his sleeves and get to work with us to help us achieve our spiritual goals!

Firstly, identify an ancestor you’d like to talk with about taking on this role of spiritual ally. Chances are, you already have an intuitive hunch as to who may be hanging around and who wants to support you from the other side.

Once you know who you’d like to talk with, construct an alter for them. Make sure to include photographs of them as well as some incense and candles. It is said that ‘spirits love spirits’ and especially if they enjoyed to imbibe in life; it is common in many cultures to include offerings of alcohol like whisky or vodka. Tobacco is another common offering. If you have access to personal effects of the person, you can include those on your alter as well.

Once you have your alter set up, create a special time to commune with your ancestor. Light the candles and incense and then pull up a chair and start talking. Talk to your ancestor as you would if they were alive and sitting with you in the room with you. Convey your love and appreciation for them and then be direct. Ask your ancestor if they would like to assist you in your psychic energy work both now and going forward into the future. Give them a sign that will be their unique way to alert you of their presence. Think of this like assigning a specific ringtone to those in your cell phone’s contact list. My sign for my grandmother is an egg while my sign for my father is watermelon. I chose to assign those distinct signs to them because my grandmother was a great admirer of the famous Fabargé eggs, and my father owned a watermelon farm in my youth; So, feel free to get imaginative when assigning different signs to your ancestors. Just make sure it’s something meaningful.

Once you’ve assigned your ancestor their unique sign, ask them to show it to you to affirm that they are interested in assisting you in your spiritual work. Be clear and specific in your asking and give it a time frame. It could be stated something like: “Grandpa Joe, your sign is a cigar because I always remember you when I smell the aroma of cigar smoke. If you would like to assist me in my spiritual path then please show me a sign of a cigar before sundown today.”

Now, don’t forget that once you ask them for the sign, it is your job to be on the lookout! Signs can and oftentimes DO come in the most random and somewhat coincidental ways. For example, I may not see a physical and actual cigar to validate my request from Grandpa Joe, but I may be playing wordle and the word happens to be ‘cigar’. The spirits of our ancestors are often playful and enjoy a bit of fun in the way that they communicate with us, and we should follow their lead and embrace more playfulness in our lives as well.
