When we set our goals from a vantage point that is more aligned with our core values, or from our sense of purpose, not only are we more likely to commit to the fruition of those goals when we are met with obstacles, but they resonate within a deeper part of our psyche that is more service oriented; thereby, accessing a whole new level of ‘why’ we have the desire for that outcome in the first place, and from a less superficial mindset.
Examining the ‘why’ is a useful resource that will help to keep us aligned with the actions necessary to achieve any goal that we may set or intention that we hold. But, to take it a step further and solidify our actions even more so, would be to commit to ‘what we would do’ when said goal is accomplished. For example: “My goal is to work out at least twice a week. The reason WHY I want to accomplish this goal is so that I have more energy and feel stronger in my daily life. WHEN I accomplish this goal, by this time next year, I will run in that 5K that’s been on my bucket-list for years.” Maybe your fitness goals aren’t as lofty as that! Maybe it’s“I WILL take my kids to a theme park and actually have the energy to enjoy myself with them!” These goals are set from a less superficial vantage point than: “I want to work out twice a week (so that I can look better naked).”
Now here’s the rub…There is absolutely NOTHING wrong with setting a goal to work out twice a week because you want to feel better when you see yourself naked. However, you are far less likely to achieve your goal of working out twice a week if you only focus on the outcome of ‘looking better naked’ than if you were to attach a ‘why’ and a ‘what you’ll do’ to your intention. This is because you are starting out with a self-judgment of ‘not being good enough’ the way you are. If you begin any journey believing you’re not good enough, imagine how much more unworthy you’ll feel when obstacles or plateaus arise. Looking for a reason that isn’t mired by the ‘…because I’m not good enough the way I am.’ mentality will set you up for more success (and is also a much kinder outlook in general).
This week, take a look at the mind map or ‘revolution blueprint’ attached and explore how your goal setting process may look different than you have done in the past. This is simply another step in understanding your true self more authentically and intimately, which will always serve you well.
